From our birthplace of Australia, the land of tanned, Nad’s has been creating tools for achieving smooth, hair free skin for over 30 years.
Our many years of waxing and pruning women and men’s (and our own!) body parts have given us true insight and understanding about the hair removal process. We’ve learnt a thing or two about DIY waxing, and we’ve got it down to a fine artform!
We know waxing at home can be intimidating and difficult, but with a few tips, you too can become a pro in no time!
Read below for my top 5 tips on the Do’s and Dont’s of DIY Waxing to get the best out of your at home waxing experience:
Do's of Waxing at Home
1. Prepare your skin before waxing by cleaning and drying.
It’s important to start with a clean, even surface.Make sure the skin is free from any oils or moisturisers so that the wax adheres to your body hair.
2. Exfoliate before a wax.
Exfoliating before your wax helps to remove dead skin cells and debris off the surface. It also helps release any ingrown hairs for a smoother result. Aim to exfoliate your skin at least 24 hours before your wax session. I recommend using loofahs, exfoliating gloves or body scrubs with either natural brown sugar, walnut shells or salt to lift and illuminate the skin.
3. Get to know your skin.
Do you have normal or sensitive skin? Determining your skin type will help you choose the right at-home wax product to suit your skin.
4. Follow the instructions closely.
Having a better understanding of how to remove your hair based on the area you wish to treat gives you greater confidence when waxing at home. Make sure to read the product instructions fully. A few things to keep an eye out for include - your hair length ( it should be about the length of a grain of rice or 2-5mm), observe which direction your hair is growing as this will guide you in knowing which way you need to remove the strip or wax off.
5. Make time.
Just as you would a hair or nail salon appointment, schedule your at-home wax session into your calendar. This way you’ll know you’ve carved out some ‘me time’ to get your hair removal ticked off the to do list! This will also help you to prepare everything you need and give you enough time to exfoliate.
Don'ts of Waxing at Home
1. Wax while on your period.
Waxing during or right before your menstrual cycle means that your body will be more sensitive to pain due to the change of hormones.
2. Wax right after showering.
Avoid waxing immediately after having a shower. This gives your skin time to dry which helps your body temperature come back to its normal state. Ensuring your skin is completely dry after a shower also helps the wax adhere better to your body hair.
3. Be hesitant about waxing, even if you’re a newbie.
Keep the step by step instructions close by when waxing, this way you can’t go wrong. Relax your body and take a few deep breaths. After a few goes at waxing, you’ll find that every wax after that will get easier and less painful. We believe in you, you’ve got this!
4. Shave in between your wax sessions.
This disrupts your hair growth cycle and may cause unsightly ingrown hairs. Also, waxing will help hair grow slower and more finely over time, but shaving will interrupt this process and cause your hairs to appear prickly again.
5. Get too much sun.
Avoid sun exposure at least a day before and after waxing. Reason being, your skin is more sensitive if sunburnt, which is likely to cause more discomfort when waxing and increases the chance of the wax causing irritation to your skin.
